Claire Dobbs - Bio

After earning my Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Kentucky in December 2021, I continued my education as a graduate student while expanding my experience through research, teaching, and leadership opportunities. During my undergraduate and graduate studies, I participated in numerous design-build initiatives, including the construction of a COVID-19 at-home office prototype and the development of portable desk prototypes for the Gray Design Building. I also studied abroad in Florence, Italy during the summer of 2019, where I collaborated on an international studio project that broadened my understanding of architecture through the lens of history, culture, and urbanism.

As a graduate student, I was selected as one of two research fellows under Brent Sturlaugson and Hannah Dewhirst to design and fabricate a community pavilion in Hazard, Kentucky. Working closely with local stakeholders, our team developed a project that responded to community needs while providing valuable hands-on experience in design, fabrication, and construction.

I also served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant under Professor Andrew Manson for undergraduate courses in architectural history and theory. In this role, I led study sessions, facilitated discussions, and provided academic support to students. Teaching strengthened my ability to communicate complex ideas, mentor emerging designers, and foster an engaging learning environment.

Beyond the classroom, I had the privilege of serving as Chair of the University of Kentucky College of Design Student Council. I organized council meetings, authored monthly communications to the student body, and acted as a liaison between students and faculty to advocate for student needs and promote collaboration across the college. This leadership experience reinforced the importance of communication, teamwork, and service within the design profession.

Since entering professional practice, I have spent the past two years at HKS, where I have contributed to both K–12 and higher education projects through all phases of design. Working on a diverse range of educational environments has strengthened my ability to develop thoughtful, user-centered solutions while collaborating within multidisciplinary teams.

In addition to my project work, I have actively sought leadership opportunities within both my firm and the broader design community. Since 2024, I have served as a Board Member for the Congress for the New Urbanism Central Texas Chapter (CNU–CTX), helping advance conversations around sustainable, people-centered urban design and fostering connections across the architecture, planning, and development communities.

Within HKS, I have served as the Austin Office Forum Representative, representing my peers by promoting collaboration, engagement, and communication across the office. I have also coordinated the HKS Austin Internship Program for the past two years, organizing programming, mentorship opportunities, and events that support the professional development of emerging designers. This role has allowed me to invest in the next generation of architects while cultivating an inclusive and engaging experience for interns as they begin their careers.

Alongside my project work, I have continued to pursue opportunities for professional growth and design leadership. I earned my Living Future Accreditation (LFA), deepening my knowledge of regenerative design and sustainable practice. I was also selected as an HKS Design Fellow, participating in a three-month intensive program focused on design research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of a full-scale installation that explored innovative approaches to the built environment.

I have continued to engage with the Austin design community through public installations. As part of the HKS design team, I contributed to the design and fabrication of a temporary playground installation for Fortlandia at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, creating an interactive space that encouraged exploration, play, and engagement with nature. I also participated in Creek Show, Austin's annual light-based public art exhibition along Waller Creek, collaborating on the design and fabrication of an immersive lighting installation that celebrated creativity and community through temporary public art.

Together, my academic foundation, professional experience, leadership roles, and commitment to design-build and public installations have shaped my approach to architecture. These experiences have reinforced my passion for creating meaningful, sustainable, and engaging spaces while continually seeking opportunities to grow as a designer, mentor emerging professionals, and contribute positively to the communities I serve.
